How Would You Re-pack Your Life?

teddy on casesI am in California today, and on my way to New York tomorrow. As I was packing last week, I did the usual pruning of my first (huge) pile of stuff. It's such a wonderful moment when you finally succeed in reducing life's necessaries down to one small(ish) suitcase. Non-essentials stripped away, portability possible (at least until you go shopping!) and that sense of freedom to roam the world relatively unencumbered. The powerful realisation that you can actually live without that shirt, or piece of jewellery or gadget or....

It was similar with my itinerary. This is a business trip, so much of my time is taken up with meetings. But around the edges, there were decisions to be made about where to stay (or not) and what to try and squeeze in around the edges - the odd shop, museum or whatever. For example, I am staying in Santa Monica at the moment and that's because I made a decision that I didn't want to go into the core part of Los Angeles. Hollywood, flash shops, celebrities - these have no appeal for me, and just make me feel sad and sort of empty. So I chose not to go there.

All this made me realise what a great process that would be in all of my life, not just for planning a trip. I fantasised about laying out all my baggage - old beliefs, routines, assumptions - and stripping out the things I no longer need to carry around.

So, I'm going to try it when I return. I'll start by make a list or a mindmap or some index cards of all the things I am carrying around that I may not need any more. These could include:

  1. Stale beliefs
  2. Possessions
  3. Old ways of doing things
  4. Assumptions about how life is or could be
  5. My 'shoulds', the things I think I should be doing, even if it drains me or stops me doing the stuff that brings joy to my life

And then I will do a similar process for all the things I do want to carry with me that I might otherwise forget about or leave behind. These could include:

  1. New ideas
  2. Changes in routine
  3. Stuff that would make life flow more easily
  4. People who I might otherwise lose touch with
  5. Things I would love to do if I was braver

And then I am going to 're-pack' my life, for say the next year or even five...

What about you? How would you re-pack your life?

  1. Only last night I was on the same track. I decided to start with the physical me.

First I decided on my goal and then mapped out all the positive triggers that will help me to stay on the right path. My list includes putting out a favourite piece of clothing, find a picture of myself that I like, display my mantra in strategic places - frame it even - all things that I will see everyday to keep me in the right frame of mind. The other thing I will do is draft up a simple table of what kinds of exercise / activity I will do over each week.

One thing I am not focusing on is food. Yet my main challenge is to stop myself from eating just that little bit more it takes that makes all the difference.

By seeing all the positive triggers around me and so changing my mind set, I am repacking my life starting with a healthier lifestyle which I believe will flow on and positively influence other areas of my life. :)

  3. This is good advice. I am going to make a list of the things I used to believe but I know aren't true any more...then cut it into little pieces!
