I've written before about the importance of play for creative thought and I emphasise curiosity and play every time I speak or run a workshop.
And that's because play frees up the mind, breaks the hold of the rational brain and let's us make connections that otherwise would not have happened.
But it's not about plasticine and playgrounds (necessarily...), and it can result in some seriously beneficial innovations.
Not convinced? Watch this:

Or, if you want to see it taken to a place too far (but really really funny), watch this:
So, how will you put play into your work today?

Fabulous videos Joanna and I love that photo.
We forget to play as we get older but it makes life so much more enjoyable. Thanks for the reminder. We're about to go on holiday so I'll take your message with me and find something playful to do every day.
now this leaves me with a task for today
:)))))
Lucky you Kate, and thanks for your post. Enjoy your break!
Astrid, I look forward to you posting a video of your serious play...unless of course you are too busy playing to record the results :)))))
Oooooooooo, I wish you were right.
I am looking for an idea for an installation for an exhibition and will see how can start from the fun angle!
And: I have just seen yr YouTube clip on Problem solving. Really good. I have so much respect for your expertise!
Can I clone you? I love fans...thanks and good luck with your installation ideas.
I had a pillow fight in a pub the other night. It was hilarious. I don't think it constituted bringing fun/play into work but it's a start, I guess. And the bouncers were kind enough not to throw us out. That probably helped as well. I don't think I could work for too long in an environment that was serious all the time. Really liked this post, Joanna
I've seen a lot in my time, Phil, but never a pillow fight in a pub...What were you doing in a pub with pillows?
There were pillows in the upstairs bar area on the lounges and it just seemed like the right thing to do to pick them up and challenge someone.
I also noticed that I tend to tell jokes a lot at work when there's not a lot to do. It's hard to maintain a sense of negativity at work when someone says something that makes you laugh out loud uncontrollably.
Love the idea that the pillows were just waiting for you - should be a part of the furniture in every pub, every office, every where.
