Looking for Change? Develop a Resources List First

If you want to implement a change in your life, it takes more than just making a decision in your head. Nothing new there.

It takes planning and determination and a belief that this change is possible for you - be it a new career, getting organized, removing a bad habit, aiming for the moon or learning to make a soufflé.

It's an excellent idea to make an inventory of your resources before setting off towards your new life. This could include useful strengths or skills, qualifications, memories of past successes in making changes, a talent for planning, qualities of mind (such as persistence) or even just having the time to think it through.

You'll find some suggestions in earlier posts, on topics like your talents, your strengths, and dealing with change.

So, if you want change in your life, first have a think about your personal resources, in areas such as:

  • strengths
  • skills
  • knowledge or sources of knowledge
  • past experiences that may help you this time
  • time
  • support (technical help, or just good friends)
  • beliefs (about your abilities, success, getting help or whatever...)
  • other useful stuff...

Think about this, and take the time to actually write down your inventory - it will help you plan the best strategy. Consider which resources are critical to your success, which will make it easier to get where you want to go. Also important is to identify any areas you need to shore up, get help with or outsource altogether. What resources are missing from your list? What can you do about that?

The other day I came across a really nifty mindmap about how to create a life resources list, as well as some good tips about how to do this.

Resources mindmap

Adam Sicinski of !Q Matrix has generously allowed me to reproduce the mindmap here, but if you check out the IQ Matrix website you can download your own PDF of it for free, or even buy it as a poster. It's good stuff.

What is on your resources list?

  1. Your confidence to actually make the jump to change may rise if you also have a 'setback' rescource list. So that if things go wrong, or simply not as planned, you've already decided that you'll see it as only a 'setback', big or small.
On my 'setback' or 'encouragement; list would be my dog! Truly. She'll always beleive in me, and bring out a smile, particularly if I take her for a walk.
Also, which of friends colleagues are helful for ideas and moving you forward, and which are there to support when there are setbacks?
Knowing beforehand what you'll do when the setbacks do occur, is half the battle of getting through them, onto your goals and dreams realised.

  2. It's funny Leanne, as your post came through I was just thinking about my support tribe - 3 other women who run their own businesses. We meet once a month to work on our businesses, but email and chat heaps in between - and their ideas and support have made all the difference to me. (Thank you coven members!)

    Resources are critical
When you move forward and when things don't work well.

  4. I think you're right, Astrid, it's most important to have a clear idea of your resources and support when you hit a road block...thanks for the comment!
