Whether we realise it or not, we all see the world through filters - formed by our temperament, our personal history, education, culture, sex and life circumstances. We may think we know the world 'as it really is', but of course this is only our personal reality and there are many many more ways to look at life than we believe, or have even encountered.

In January every year I teach a 5 day writing workshop at Camp Creative. This year it was on the elements of story, which gave us a great excuse to watch movies like To Kill a Mockingbird and share our favourite stories. It was fun.

Assumptions are useful, often vital even. They provide a framework for our daily routines, reflect shared values and generally simplify life (imagine trying to get out of bed in the morning without assumptions about gravity, stable floors, hot coffee and warm slippers - or, in my case, Ugh boots).

One of the greatest blocks to a creative work environment is all the things that aren't said, often because things are just assumed to be a particular way. There is an elephant in the room; everyone knows it's there but no-one talks about it.

Many people believe that all creative genius is a solo affair and that to involve a group at best dilutes the process and at worst risks ridicule or outright idea theft. Whilst it is true that private space is vital for the imagination to roam unchecked, don't underestimate the importance of timely group discussion.
