Over the break, I reflected on 2010 and the opportunities I had taken up or created for myself - and the ones I had let slip. I realised that in many cases I had let feelings of anxiety (or self-doubt or flatness or uncertainty or even anger) cripple my impulse to go into the world and do the work I wanted to do. I was kind of horrified when I took the time to see how often I had held myself back this way.

Yesterday I filed a story for a big Australian magazine. I've written for them before, and the story was a commission, but it still brings up the same old anxiety, the one about rejection. Everyone living a creative life knows about the 'R' word. (And if you don't, you are not living close enough to the edge.)

According to a major new IBM survey of more than 1,500 Chief Executive Officers from 60 countries and 33 industries worldwide, chief executives believe that the most important attribute for successfully navigating an increasing complex world is creativity. They thought that creativity was more important than rigor, management discipline, integrity or even vision.

I had a presentation at a boardroom lunch in Brisbane last Friday, on creative thinking as your career edge. I did all my prep, all good, then a couple of days before the event I just thought I'd better check what AV setup they had. Disaster, no slides, no video, nothing allowed.
