In many circles it is considered old-fashioned to be fully 'committed' in work or life... But in the creative life, a fierce commitment to your work may be your most effective strategy to ensure you finish your project, or create that new career, or come up with a winning idea at work.

A couple of years ago I had the privilege of interviewing one of the world's top neuropsychologists, (currently Clinical Professor of Neurology at New York University School of Medicine) Elkhonon Golberg. I was talking to him about age-proofing the brain and staving off dementia, but (naturally) couldn't resist slipping in a question about how to maximize the brain's capacity for creative thinking. His immediate answer: 'Novelty and diversity, and more novelty'.

I have been a fan of Tony Buzan's Mind Mapping technique for at least 15 years. I use it most days for one thing or another. I plan workshops, map out articles to write, prepare my class notes - and daydream possibilities for fixing up the back yard.

Have you come across this nifty idea called 'shifting' from a guy called Robert Epstein? He has long been a fan of having groups work together for a while, then shift out of the group to work on the problem individually, then come back together again for another group round, then shift out again, and on it goes.
