As regular readers will know (love that phrase...) I have been having some ups and downs lately, such that I sometimes feel like Frodo in that scene in Lord of the Rings when Sauron turns his evil eye on those poor hobbits :) One of the downs was a bad ankle sprain. For various reasons, when it happened I wasn't able to follow the 'Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate' advice and so of course it all swelled up and has taken now 5 weeks to get close to healing. Enough whingeing, you've got the look.

It's not currently fashionable to talk about talents: we focus on skills and experience, or describe someone as 'gifted' without getting too specific. But talents are part of our essential make-up - the gifts, passions, interests and natural aptitudes we are born with. If you want to find long-term satisfaction and success, it's helpful to identify your talents (and equally, your non-talents).

I am giving some workshops in Victoria over the next week, for the Australian and New Zealand Buddhist Youth Conference. The main topic is 'Building a Strengths Profile', which is one of my favourite themes.

I've been teaching a career workshop this week and talking about working with your strengths to get to that state that Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi calls flow. It's an almost automatic, effortless, yet highly focused and pleasurable state of consciousness where you are in your element and performing at your peak.
