I'm going through a project at the moment of finding ways to work smarter. Partly this is about matching my skills with profitable work and 'best fit' clients. Last week's post on asking questions to develop your curiosity seems to have struck a chord (thanks for all the emails and comments...). So I thought I'd follow up with the other half, which is about actions you can take to stimulate your creative thinking. These also work brilliantly to help you get unstuck when the inspiration dries up or your project is just going round and round in circles.

Whenever I run a workshop or give a presentation on creative thinking, I talk about the value of curiosity - it's one of the 4 cornerstones in my 4 cornerstones model. It's all very well to tell people to 'Be Curious' but unless you offer some practical tips, it's about as useful as saying 'Be Happy' (and just as irritating).

When something goes wrong in business (or in our personal life, for that matter) we tend to spend little time on analysing the reasons, but jump straight in to find the quick fix. Of course, if we haven't worked out why the problem occurred in the first place, this approach is really an experiment that has an almost random chance of success.

It's a great technique: Whenever you have a problem to solve, or need to come up with a fresh idea, challenge yourself to come up with at least three ideas, not just one. Or if you are a team leader, challenge your team to find three ways of doing something, not just settling for their first plan.

Yesterday I went to my first networking lunch with the Athena Network, and excellent fun it was, too. The week before, I was emailed a template so I could prepare a one-minute pitch about my work, and being a good girl, I followed it. (You know the thing, 10 seconds on your name, 30 seconds on what you do, a quick call to action then repeat your name.)
