You know how it happens...you have an idea, or think of a way to solve a problem then after working on it for a while, you get stuck. It's not happening any more, the ideas run dry and you panic. Familiar?

In many circles it is considered old-fashioned to be fully 'committed' in work or life... But in the creative life, a fierce commitment to your work may be your most effective strategy to ensure you finish your project, or create that new career, or come up with a winning idea at work.

A couple of years ago I had the privilege of interviewing one of the world's top neuropsychologists, (currently Clinical Professor of Neurology at New York University School of Medicine) Elkhonon Golberg. I was talking to him about age-proofing the brain and staving off dementia, but (naturally) couldn't resist slipping in a question about how to maximize the brain's capacity for creative thinking. His immediate answer: 'Novelty and diversity, and more novelty'.

A Scientific American Mind magazine issue on creativity a few years ago reported on fascinating research showing that creative people less likely to filter out peripheral information or irrelevant data from their minds than the rest of us.

Assumptions are useful, often vital even. They provide a framework for our daily routines, reflect shared values and generally simplify life (imagine trying to get out of bed in the morning without assumptions about gravity, stable floors, hot coffee and warm slippers - or, in my case, Ugh boots).
